Causes of tooth discolouration

  • Food and drinks – coffee, tea, red wine, dark sauces and dark berries can all stain your teeth. If you are worried about food or drink staining your clothes or tablecloth it will also have the ability to stain your teeth.
  • Smoking – the nicotine present in cigarettes stains teeth. You will notice a yellowing of your teeth within weeks and over time your teeth can turn brown.
  • Poor Oral Hygiene – inadequate brushing and interdental cleaning can cause a build-up of plaque and calculus that can discolour teeth.
  • Medical Treatment – Treatments for certain conditions can also affect tooth colour. For example, head and neck radiation and chemotherapy can cause teeth discoloration.
  • Medications – There are a number of different medications that can lead to staining. If you are worried about this, speak to your doctor to see if there are alternatives that you can take.
  • Ageing – As you age, the outer layer of enamel on your teeth gets worn away, revealing the natural yellow colour of dentin.

Good Oral Hygiene – be sure to brush your teeth using a fluoride toothpaste twice a day and use interdental cleaning aids to clean those areas that brushing alone misses.

Avoid Food and Drink that stains – Foods that are firm or crisp help clean teeth as they’re eaten. Apples, raw carrots and celery can all help to keep teeth white.

Use a straw –Use a straw to prevent dark drinks coming into contact with your teeth. Enjoy potentially staining beverages in moderation, and drink water between each. Water is good for your overall health and will also help wash away dark liquids from the teeth.
