Teeth Whitening Options Available from your dentist.
A recent study showed that 61% of people have been attracted to a partner by their smile. If you a looking to bring back your teeth’s natural sparkle, why not consider teeth whitening an effective way of lightening the natural colour of your teeth without damaging the tooth itself. Tooth whitening can be effective in lightening staining caused by food, drink and smoking. It can also improving staining caused by certain antibiotics and the general ageing process.
In 2012 new regulations where brought into effect, stating that teeth whitening is a dental procedure and as such should only be carried out by qualified dental professionals. Regulation was also bought into effect to limit the strength of the whitening solutions used. Dentists can use solutions up to a maximum of 6% hydrogen peroxide whereas over the counter products and kits can only contain 0.1% hydrogen peroxide. This would be considered too low to have any noticeable effect on the colour of your teeth. So if you are looking for a safe and effective way to whiten your teeth consider asking your dentist at your next appointment.
There are three main types of teeth whitening available.
1.) In chair teeth whitening
In this instance the whitening solution will either be painted onto your teeth or loaded into custom made bleaching trays and then a special light will be shone onto the teeth to help activate the bleaching solution. The treatment will normally take around an hour and during this time the procedure may be repeated with fresh solution two or three times.
2.) At home teeth whitening
In this instance the dentist will make custom made whitening trays by taking impressions of your teeth. You will then be given whitening solution to put into the trays and wear them at home. You will need to wear the trays for anywhere from 30 minutes to sleeping in them for 8 hours overnight dependent on the solution that the dentist uses and how quickly you would like to see results. Normally we would advise that treatment will take between 3-4 weeks to get the desired results.
3.) A combination of both in chair teeth whitening and at home teeth whitening
It is also possible to combine the two treatments to give you long lasting results quickly. The dentist will start the whitening treatment off in surgery with in chair teeth whitening and you will then continue treatment at home in your own time with at home teeth whitening.
At The Dental Studio we are able to offer both in chair teeth whitening and at home teeth whitening to best fit around your schedule.
