I had my braces fit at the weekend

Dental Braces in Colchester

Hello my name is Sophie and I am a Dental Nurse at the Dental Studio, I have been apart of the Team for an amazing 9 years now.

I started my Advanced level 3 Diploma as an Apprentice Dental Nurse at the age of 17, with only stepping out for a small amount of time to have my two children.

Why did you choose to go for braces?

My main reason for wanting a brace was because of my canine teeth (commonly known as our pointy teeth, which are located third tooth along counting from the centreline of the mouth). These canines have always been higher and was starting to become more obvious to me when smiling in photos and although may seem minor to some people this was something I was becoming conscious of. I had a consultation with our Dentist Ian and an OPG radiograph was taken at the practice with our Dental Nurse Catherine. After completing my Full Orthodontic Consultation, I knew my teeth were healthy and that I could book in to start my brace treatment. So I booked in for my Fixed Tooth Coloured Brace fit on Saturday 3rd September. Exciting!

Braces Fit

The basic steps of having my brace fit;

  • Firstly a Retraction prop was placed in – if you see the picture to the left, this is put in the mouth to make sure your oral tissues are out of the way and so dentist has a good view to fit the brace
  • A green gel is put on each tooth to clean the surface. This is then washed off and dried with the help of the dental nurse
  • A small brush with a bonding solution is painted onto each tooth
  • The bracket cement was then placed on by Zara our dental nurse and handed to Ian each bracket at a time
  • Ian placed the brackets on to each tooth and then sets the glue with a blue setting light
  • After the brackets were set into the correct place, a tooth coloured wire was fitted into the brackets and held on into place with clear bands
  • The brace is now fitted It took only around 10-15 minutes. Amazing, quick and painless
  • I then took a look at my new brace in the mirror and was giving my oral hygiene instructions and goodie bag. This included a box of wax, Manual
Toothbrush , Interdental brush, Mini Toothpaste and some written instructions.

Braces

The brace is on

As you can tell the brace is barely noticeable. I am extremely pleased with the aesthetics of the brace, with its tooth coloured brackets and
tooth coloured wires it’s a brace you can hardly tell I even have on. I am next booked in for an appointment in 4 weeks time to have the brace
adjusted.
