Botox Done by my Dentist? Well Who Else!

Botox at DentistWe can hear you now. “Don’t Botox and dermal fillers procedures belong in a specialist practice, like a plastic surgeon or a dermatologist?”  While dermatologists and plastic surgeons were the first healthcare providers to integrate Botox into their practices that does not make these “specialty” procedures specific to them by any means.

Actually most dentists routinely inject in the same areas where Botox and dermal fillers are injected for cosmetic results. The only difference is that Botox and dermal fillers are extra-oral injections.

Dentists are actually the best professionals to deliver these applications because they are the best injectors around. They inject anesthetic for a living and know how to make these injections comfortable, quick, and relatively painless for their patients.

Botox and Dermal Fillers for Cosmetic Enhancement

Botox acts a muscle relaxant. In 3 to 10 days after treatment, the skin above these relaxed muscles becomes nice and smooth.  It can smooth facial wrinkles between the eyes, the corners of the eyes, on the forehead, around the lips, and neck. The effects will last for approximately 3 to 4 months.

Dermal fillers are injected beneath the skin surface to replace lost volume, creating a fuller, younger lookon the face, neck hands and décolletage. The effect lasts 6 to 12 months.

Either of these procedures can be done in a quick and comfortable 5 to 15 minute visit.

Botox for Clinical Use

Botox can be used in a variety of ways in a dental practice. Often it is used as a minimally invasive way to reduce the intensity of muscle contractions that contribute to TMJ and facial pain and can give patients significant relief from headaches and muscle pain.

It can also be used to relieve bruxism (grinding the teeth), enhance the healing environment after implant surgery and to treat “gummy smile”.

Is it Safe?

Botox treatments are the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the United Kingdom. The most common dermal fillers used are made of hyaluronic acid which is a naturally occurring substance in the body. When the effects of Botox and dermal fillers are gone, they are gone completely with no residue or after effects present.
